On clinical consultation, coverage rises while appropriateness on held-out physician criteria falls below the untrained model.

The fix: Protocol-level Rubrics (ProRubric) groups criteria so a dimension counts only when all of its criteria hold. Appropriateness rose 10.8 points without losing coverage.

What it means: How you aggregate a checklist matters as much as what it checks. Additive rewards invite compensation for critical failures.

Reinforcement learning works best when a verifier exists, such as a compiler for code. Where none exists, teams use rubrics: an LLM judge checks criteria and turns the verdicts into a reward, usually by summing them. Researchers from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, ByteDance and collaborators show that this additive step is the weak point — and that the same criteria, regrouped, behave very differently.

i10X chart based on data from Liu et al. Additive rubrics systematically reward that pattern.

The paper’s broader claim applies beyond healthcare: any open-ended domain trained on checklists can game a sum.

🧪 Method in brief

Experiments use Qwen3-4B and Qwen3-8B with public benchmarks including HealthBench and MedQA. ProRubric groups criteria offline into protocol-level dimensions; a dimension counts only when all criteria hold and its failure clause does not fire. The RL optimizer is unchanged.
