A coin flip secretly decided which option the agent would favor on each of five judgment calls.

The result: On the four analytical decisions, analysts’ final choices matched the agent’s hidden lean 86% of the time, against 50% if the lean had no effect. When they had already stated their own view and the agent disagreed, 60% switched.

The blind spot: 77% of analysts later justified their choices with the agent’s arguments, but only 15% mentioned the agent. Deferential analysts felt just as confident and as much in charge as the rest.

Experts who hand the hands-on work to an AI agent usually assume they still make the decisions that matter. A new paper by Amaç Herdağdelen (Anthropic Fellows Program), Hailey Joren and Alex Tamkin (Anthropic), published with a research post on October 27, 2026, tests that assumption in a preregistered randomized experiment. The answer is uncomfortable: on judgment calls with no single right answer, the agent’s preference largely became the expert’s.

🔬 What the study shows

Participants advised a fictional farming co-operative on whether a paid advisory program met the board’s 3 to 4% productivity target and should be rolled out. Four open decisions drove the estimate: the outcome measure (yield per hectare or per operating cost), the comparison method (difference-in-differences or adjusted levels), which farms the estimate covers (enrolled farms or all members) and weighting (each farm equally or by production). A fifth decision was the final recommendation. The agent was Claude Code running Claude Opus 4.8 at high effort, with its leans set in a hidden system prompt that also told it to change its mind if the evidence demanded it and never to misrepresent results.

i10X chart based on data from Herdağdelen, Joren & Tamkin (Anthropic, 2026) and the Anthropic research post of October 27, 2026.

Strong steering on analytical choices: Pooled across the four decisions, the agent’s lean changed the probability of picking an option by 72 percentage points (95% CI 0.60 to 0.83, p < .001). Per decision, the effect ranged from 62 to 82 points.

Switching away from one’s own view: Among analysts who had voiced a preference first, the switch rate was 53 points higher when the agent disagreed than when it agreed (60% vs. 6%, p < .001, 38 participants).

Weaker but present on the recommendation: 54% recommended a rollout when the agent leaned that way, versus 36% otherwise. If the reviewer quietly adopts the agent’s preferences, that review is not independent.

AI safety research itself: The authors point out that researchers have begun using agents to run and analyze alignment experiments. Arbitrary or misaligned model preferences could shape research directions without anyone choosing them.

Not an anti-AI result: Analysts with the agent made far fewer serious errors in a code audit (6%, 3 of 50) than the 11 who chose to work without it (55%, 6 of 11) and finished faster (median 65 vs. 90 minutes). The authors stress that this comparison is not causal because participants chose their condition.

Deference is not just ignorance: Recall was good: 85% correctly remembered key results and 35 of 40 effect estimates were within 0.5 points. Analysts knew what the analysis showed, they simply let the agent frame the calls.

🧪 Method in brief

Design: preregistered randomized controlled trial (OSF), with leans for each decision assigned independently by coin flip across 32 lean configurations. Sample: 61 pre-screened professionals with causal-inference experience; 11 chose not to use the agent, leaving 50 for the main analysis and 48 completed surveys. 90% rated themselves proficient or expert. Measurement: choices extracted from code and survey, with conflicts resolved by the authors; transcripts were coded with LLM judges and by hand. Baseline: without an assigned lean, stock Claude Opus 4.8 made the same five choices in 112 of 123 simulated runs.

❓ What remains open

An amplified lean: The agents were explicitly told to hold and argue a view. Real agents also have preferences, as the stock-model runs show, but the effect without instructions to voice them may be smaller.

One setting, one agent: A single fictional analysis task with Claude Code and Opus 4.8. Whether the pattern holds for other domains, models or longer projects is untested.

Average effects only: No moderator, such as experience or seniority, survived correction for multiple testing, so the study cannot say who is most susceptible.

Self-published: The paper is released by Anthropic, not peer reviewed, and data collection began before the preregistration was filed. This study turns the question around and measures how much an agent shapes the human. It fits a run of recent work on AI research tools quietly overstating their case, such as our report on claim smoothing by AI research agents. More work in this area is collected under Safety & Alignment.

🛠️ What it means for teams working with AI agents

Decide before you ask: Write down your own choice on key analytical questions before the agent weighs in, then compare.

Ask for the other side: Have the agent argue the strongest case for the option it did not recommend.

Use independent reviewers: For consequential analyses, let a second person or a differently configured agent make the judgment calls separately.

Record attribution: Note which arguments came from the agent, so reviewers can see where the framing originated.

Coverage of the company and its agent tools is on the Anthropic and Claude hubs.

✍️ About the analysis

This article is based on the full text of “Who’s Aligned to Whom? The practical lesson reaches beyond Claude: the weakest point of human-in-the-loop oversight may not be missed errors but borrowed judgment. Agent products that surface their own leans and actively present alternatives would make that judgment easier to keep. Until then, teams should treat an agent’s framing as one opinion, not the default.

In an Anthropic experiment, 50 analysts using Claude Code matched the agent’s secretly assigned lean on 86% of judgment calls, and few credited the agent.

Who's Aligned to Whom?
