A European Commission filing published on October 19, 2026 shows that Apple, through a subsidiary, agreed on June 17 to acquire “certain assets” of Samplab GmbH, a two-founder AI audio startup from Zurich, and to hire “certain Samplab employees” (MacRumors, AppleInsider). Samplab’s tools turned audio into editable MIDI-like notes, detected and rewrote chords and split tracks into stems. The service was switched off on September 17, and samplab.com now redirects to Apple. Neither company has said a word about price or plans. What follows is everything verifiable about Samplab, what Apple likely wants from it, and what remains unknown.

⚡ Quick Take

The deal: An EU Digital Markets Act notice dated June 17, 2026 lists Apple acquiring certain assets of Samplab GmbH and hiring certain employees. It became public on October 19. No price and no headcount were disclosed.

The company: Samplab was founded in Zurich in 2020 by Manuel Fritsche and Gian-Marco Hutter. LinkedIn lists two employees, and the startup came out of the ETH Zurich ecosystem.

The technology: Polyphonic note editing on audio, audio-to-MIDI, chord detection and editing, stem separation, plus an on-device resynthesis plugin and a free text-to-sample app built on Meta’s MusicGen.

The likely target: Logic Pro already has Stem Splitter and Chord ID, but its Flex Pitch editing is monophonic. Polyphonic note editing, today the territory of Celemony’s Melodyne and RipX, would be new for a mainstream DAW.

The cost to users: Samplab shut down on September 17, 2026. Older versions stopped working, accounts are being deleted, and only a final wind-down build can open existing projects.

What happened

The acquisition did not come from a press release. It surfaced because Apple is a designated “gatekeeper” under the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which obliges it to inform the European Commission about deals involving core platform services, digital services or data collection (MacRumors). The Commission’s public list of acquisitions was updated on October 19 with an entry under Apple, dated June 17, 2026, for a company called Samplab GmbH (The Verge).

The filing is thin. According to the coverage, it says Apple, through an unnamed subsidiary, will acquire certain assets of Samplab and offer employment to certain Samplab employees (AppleInsider, MusicRadar). It does not list which assets, what Apple paid, or how many people moved. That structure, assets plus selected staff rather than the whole company, matters: it is the same pattern AppleInsider describes for Apple’s earlier deal with Huxe, an AI audio startup.

The timeline on the Samplab side fits the filing. In late June, shortly after the June 17 deal date, Samplab posted on its website that it was closing and would refund annual subscribers the remainder of their fees (AppleInsider). The shutdown notice, still indexed from samplab.com, read: “After many years of working on Samplab, we have made the decision to pursue a new opportunity. As a result, we will discontinue the service after an interim wind-down period” (Samplab). Support for existing users ended on September 17, 2026. Today the site routes to apple.com, links to Samplab plugin pages land on an Apple “page not found”, its YouTube videos have been removed and its X account appears gutted (AppleInsider).

Apple has not commented. When asked about deals like this, the company has for years used the same boilerplate: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans” (9to5Mac, AppleInsider). As of November 3, i10x found no Apple statement specific to Samplab.

Who Samplab was

Samplab GmbH was founded in 2020 in Zurich by Manuel Fritsche and Gian-Marco Hutter (AppleInsider). Its LinkedIn page described the mission in one line, “Music production for the age of AI”, and listed two employees, both co-founders (LinkedIn). AppleInsider estimates the company had no more than ten staff and, based on LinkedIn profiles, may have consisted only of its founders. An archived About page cited by The Verge put the founding thesis bluntly: “AI will revolutionize the music industry” (The Verge).

The startup grew out of the ETH Zurich orbit. In June 2022, ETH listed Samplab among five start-ups “with strong ties to ETH Zurich” that won at the 25th Venture awards, describing it as “a start-up created by ETH students” whose AI breaks each audio file “down into its individual notes, which can then be edited and arranged on the screen however the user wants” (ETH Zurich). Venture’s own winners page records Samplab GmbH as second place in the Retail & Consumer Services category in 2022 (Venture).

Funding was modest by AI-startup standards. A LinkedIn company data profile lists a CHF 10,000 grant in 2022 and a pre-seed round of about USD 20,600 dated July 2022 (LinkedIn company profile). i10x could not verify these figures in a primary source such as a company announcement or the Swiss commercial register, and found no evidence of a priced venture round. If accurate, they suggest Samplab was largely bootstrapped through subscription revenue, which makes the company a classic acqui-hire candidate: deep, specialized know-how concentrated in very few people.

What Samplab built

Samplab shipped four products or product lines between 2022 and 2025. Together they show a steady progression from sample editing toward full note-level control of audio and on-device generative tools.

Samplab: the audio editor that treats audio like MIDI

The flagship was Samplab itself, available as a plugin and, from January 2022, as a standalone desktop app (LinkedIn). Its creators called it “the ultimate audio editor for musicians” and promised users could edit audio as if they were “working with MIDI” (MusicRadar). Samplab 2 arrived in January 2023 as the company’s “biggest update so far”, chord detection and editing followed in May 2023, and Samplab 2.3 in March 2024 introduced a new audio engine with real-time time-stretching and pitch-shifting (LinkedIn).

In its final form, Samplab’s own footer listed four core functions: audio to MIDI, chord detection, stem splitting, and BPM and key detection (PianoToSheetMusic). MacRumors summarized the feature set as converting audio to MIDI, detecting and editing chords, stem splitting, and editing notes in polyphonic audio “without affecting the timbre of the original” (MacRumors). The developers described the plugin as using AI “to transcribe polyphonic audio into editable MIDI notes while preserving the original timbre” (MusicTech). MusicTech also reports “granular stem separation with free editability of individual notes”, which goes further than the typical four-stem split.

Pricing followed a freemium model. A free Basic tier was limited to 10-second mono samples, and Premium, which unlocked stereo and unlimited sample length, cost £9.99 per month according to MusicTech (MusicTech); earlier coverage lists Premium at $9.99 per month (rekkerd.org).

TextToSample: Meta’s MusicGen on the desktop

In July 2023, Samplab released TextToSample, a free standalone app and VST3 plugin for Windows and macOS that generates short audio samples from text prompts (Bedroom Producers Blog). Samplab described it as “making Meta’s AI music generator available as a Desktop application”: users type a prompt such as “jazzy sound with saxophone”, and the model generates a sample or continues an existing one. “All processing is done on your own machine,” the company wrote, so it works best with a GPU or an Apple Silicon Mac (Samplab on LinkedIn).

Bedroom Producers Blog reported that the tool used the weights of the “small” version of Meta’s open-source MusicGen model, part of the AudioCraft library. Meta trained MusicGen on 20,000 hours of licensed music, including an internal dataset and Shutterstock and Pond5 music data (Bedroom Producers Blog). That licensing detail is not trivial in 2026, when the provenance of training data has become the central legal question in generative music.

Resynthesizer: one-shots into playable instruments

Samplab’s last new product, Resynthesizer, launched in June 2025. It is an AU and VST3 plugin that analyzes a one-shot sample with a locally running AI engine, separates its harmonic and percussive components, and rebuilds the sound so it can be played chromatically like a synthesizer patch (Gearnews, Bedroom Producers Blog). Users could load two samples and morph between them with an LFO, with filters, drive, glide, envelope and reverb on top. Gearnews listed a permanent license at €77.99 (regularly €129.99), or €9.99 per month as part of a “Samplab Complete” subscription (Gearnews).

Both TextToSample and Resynthesizer ran on-device. That is a notable design choice for an Apple acquirer: Apple has positioned on-device processing as a privacy and performance advantage, and a team with practical experience shipping local audio models on Apple Silicon fits that strategy. i10x found no published technical paper or model card describing Samplab’s proprietary transcription and separation models, so their architecture and training data remain undisclosed.

Why Apple wants it

Apple already ships some of what Samplab did. Logic Pro has had AI-based Stem Splitter since 2024, which isolates vocals, drums, bass and other parts (AppleInsider), and it has Chord ID (MacRumors). Samplab also sold its software as a plugin for DAWs including Logic Pro, so the integration path is short.

The gap is polyphony. Logic’s Flex Pitch lets users edit pitch, timing and length of notes in an audio region as if working in the Piano Roll, but it is limited to monophonic material. Samplab could break open chords and edit individual notes inside them. MusicRadar’s “best guess” is that Apple will use Samplab’s technology to give Flex Pitch a polyphonic upgrade, “bringing the functionality of tools like Samplab and Melodyne to Logic Pro users” (MusicRadar).

MusicTech reaches the same conclusion from the competitive angle. Cubase Pro “arguably leads the DAWs” in note-level audio editing thanks to VariAudio, but VariAudio is not polyphonic either. For polyphonic editing “in any DAW, you need a copy of Melodyne or something even more specialised like RipX”, and every current solution is plugin-based (MusicTech). Building it natively into Logic would be a real differentiator. MusicTech adds that most DAW stem splitters stop at about four stem types, so the first DAW that could “unmix a whole production” would score “quite the coup”.

There is also a business frame. Since January 2026, Logic Pro is part of Apple Creator Studio, a bundle of Apple’s creative apps priced at $12.99 per month or $129 per year (Apple Newsroom, MacRumors). AppleInsider expects Samplab’s technology to land in Creator Studio and Logic Pro (AppleInsider). Every distinctive AI feature makes a subscription bundle easier to justify, and polyphonic audio editing is a feature that working producers currently pay a separate plugin vendor for.

Generative audio: possible, but less likely

MusicRadar raises, and then downplays, a second scenario: Suno-style generative tools for creating samples and loops. Logic’s existing Session Players generate drum, bass, keyboard and synth parts, but as MIDI, not audio. “Generative AI remains controversial in the creative community and all of the mainstream DAWs have yet to embrace it,” MusicRadar notes, and calls this path “less likely, but possible” (MusicRadar). TextToSample shows the Samplab founders had hands-on experience shipping a generative model to musicians. It does not show that Apple intends to ship one.

The bigger pattern: Apple’s quiet AI shopping list

Samplab is one of many small AI deals Apple has disclosed through the EU list in 2026. AppleInsider’s acquisition tracker shows Q.ai (January, imaging and speech understanding for Siri), PromptAI, Animato, Patchflyer, Kuzu, Play, SigScaler, MotionVFX (March, plugins and effects for video editors) and PlasmaSolve, among others (AppleInsider). Q.ai was the outlier in size, at an estimated $2 billion (AppleInsider). On November 3, Swiss Apple magazine macprime reported Apple’s takeover of “Ascend.io” alongside Samplab (macprime on X).

Two strands stand out. First, creator tools: MotionVFX for video and Samplab for audio both feed the professional apps now bundled in Creator Studio. Second, Zurich. Apple has run research and development in Zurich since buying the startup Faceshift in 2015 (inside-it.ch). In late October, the Tages-Anzeiger reported, and several Swiss outlets followed, that Apple is renting about 9,500 square meters of office space in Zurich-Altstetten, enough for 500 to 700 workplaces, with work there focused largely on machine learning, computer vision and AI (macprime, Nau.ch). Apple did not respond to the newspaper’s questions. A Zurich-based audio-ML team is a natural fit for that expansion, though no source connects the two directly.

Who is most affected

Samplab’s users bear the immediate cost. After September 17, 2026, the website went offline, new audio could no longer be uploaded, older versions of Samplab and Resynthesizer stopped working entirely, and accounts were to be deleted (Samplab, PianoToSheetMusic). Samplab released a final version that can open existing projects. Resynthesizer buyers and Samplab Complete subscribers were offered a fully offline Resynthesizer build; past subscribers and trial users received a legacy version that keeps existing one-shots working but cannot load new audio (Samplab). Yearly subscribers whose term ran past the shutdown were promised a refund of the remaining balance through Paddle or MuseHub; the notice mentions no refund for monthly plans (PianoToSheetMusic).

Logic Pro users are the potential winners, if Apple ships. Celemony (Melodyne), RipX and Steinberg (Cubase VariAudio) face the most direct competitive pressure if polyphonic editing becomes a built-in Logic feature at no extra cost to Creator Studio subscribers (MusicTech). And other small AI audio startups get a clear signal: a two-person team with differentiated technology can be an attractive target for a platform company, but the product may not survive the exit.

What X is saying

Discussion on X has been modest and mostly informational, spread across English, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Chinese accounts. MusicTech shared its piece with the line that Apple acquired Samplab “seemingly with an eye on enhancing Logic Pro’s AI tools” (MusicTech on X). One producer framed the question many users are asking: “If it lands in Logic Pro, note-level audio editing stops being a studio-only trick. Would you trust it?” (Parag Deshpande on X). A more cynical reading came from an account that grouped Samplab with Huxe and other deals: “Apple isn’t buying AI companies. It’s buying AI people” (post on X). Zurich ecosystem watchers listed the Samplab asset deal in their monthly round-ups of local startup news (Edouard on X).

i10x searched X for replies from Grok about Samplab between October 18 and November 3, 2026 and found none, so there is no Grok position to summarize. The X reaction overall tracks the trade press: excitement about polyphonic editing in Logic, and frustration from users who lost a tool they paid for.

Critical analysis: what the coverage gets right, and what it assumes

Almost every report, including this one, leans on inference. The only primary facts are the EU entry, Samplab’s shutdown notice and the redirect to apple.com. Everything about Logic Pro is educated speculation, and it is worth separating the strong inferences from the weak ones.

Strong: Apple wanted Samplab’s people and polyphonic audio know-how. The asset-plus-hiring structure, the shutdown timing and the redirect all point that way.

Plausible: The target is Logic Pro, GarageBand or Creator Studio. Samplab already ran inside Logic as a plugin, and the feature gap against Flex Pitch is real.

Unproven: That Apple will ship generative audio. One free MusicGen wrapper from 2023 is thin evidence of Apple’s intentions.

Unknown: Price, headcount, which models or patents changed hands, and whether Samplab’s training data comes with usable licenses. The filing discloses none of it.

The technical bar is also higher than the headlines imply. Separating overlapping notes in a mixed recording, editing one and resynthesizing the result without artifacts is exactly the problem Melodyne has spent years refining. Samplab’s own early limits, such as the 10-second mono cap on its free tier, show how compute-hungry this work is. Doing it in real time inside a DAW on a laptop, at Apple’s quality bar, could take a while. Users should not expect a polyphonic Flex Pitch in the next point release.

Finally, the deal is a reminder about software ownership. Samplab handled its wind-down more carefully than many acquired startups: it gave about three months’ notice, shipped offline builds and promised pro-rated refunds for annual plans. Even so, subscription-gated, server-assisted tools stopped working on a fixed date, and monthly subscribers got no refund. For producers, the lesson is to keep rendered audio and exported MIDI, not just project files that depend on a vendor’s servers.

What’s still open

What Apple paid and how many Samplab employees joined, which the EU filing does not disclose.

Whether Samplab’s founders are working on Logic Pro, on Creator Studio, or in a broader Apple audio or machine-learning group in Zurich.

Whether Apple acquired Samplab’s models and training data, and under what licenses that data was collected.

When, or whether, polyphonic note editing appears in Logic Pro or GarageBand, and on which hardware.

How Celemony, RipX and Steinberg respond if a polyphonic editor becomes a standard feature of a $12.99-per-month bundle.

✍️ About the analysis

This independent, research-based i10x analysis synthesizes the European Commission disclosure as reported by MacRumors, AppleInsider and The Verge, Samplab’s own shutdown notice and product announcements, music-technology trade coverage, Swiss business reporting, and public posts on X from October 18 to November 3, 2026. Apple is not chasing headline-grabbing text-to-song models; it is buying narrow, hard-won capabilities that make its existing pro apps harder to leave, and it is doing it quietly, often in Zurich. If polyphonic note editing ships natively in Logic Pro, a feature that has supported an entire plugin category becomes a checkbox in a subscription bundle. Watch the next Logic Pro release notes, and watch whether Apple says anything at all about where the training data behind those features came from.

Apple quietly acquired assets of Zurich AI audio startup Samplab and hired staff, an EU filing shows.
