The feature connects bank, credit card, loan and investment accounts through Plaid, the network that already links many apps to banks. Access is read-only: Personal Finance cannot move, manage or invest money, and Anthropic says it “isn’t designed to give investment advice.” The launch, covered the same day by TechCrunch and The Verge, puts Claude in a category OpenAI‘s ChatGPT entered in May 2026 with its own Plaid-based finance tools.

⚡ Quick Take

Who gets it: A gradual US beta on Pro, Max and Ultra. It is not available on Free, Team or Enterprise plans, and it may not appear yet even for eligible accounts.

What it does: After a user links accounts through Plaid, Claude can summarize spending, cash flow, subscriptions, upcoming bills and balances, and answer questions such as “Where did my money go last month?”

What Claude can see: Bank name; account name, type and last four digits; balances and credit limits; and up to 24 months of transactions. For anything shared with Claude outside the hub, the user’s existing privacy settings apply.

What happened

Anthropic’s announcement, also posted on Claude’s X account, pitches the feature as straight answers “from your own balances and transactions,” with no ads or sponsored recommendations and no Anthropic credit cards, loans or savings accounts of its own. In a walkthrough, asking “Where did my money go this month?” produces a category breakdown — in Anthropic’s example, $4,309.37 of spending, more than half on rent and utilities and $1,024.51 on food and drink — and follow-ups such as “Is that more than usual?” or “So what’s left before payday?”

Claude can also flag things that are easy to miss across connected accounts: charges that hit twice, unexpected fees, or a bill that has crept up all year. Users can ask broader questions, including whether they are spending more than they earn, or what an APR is and what theirs has cost over the past year. Claude can build a weekly spending chart, a calendar of upcoming payments, or a dashboard of widgets the user can add, edit, remove and reorder.

Plaid, announcing the partnership the same day, said it is powering account connections so users can get tailored answers based on their real numbers. Plaid CTO Will Robinson wrote that personal finance is already among the most common topics people bring to Claude, and that Claude’s access to connected accounts is read-only. Plaid said 69% of US consumers in its research are willing to share personal information with AI in financial services when they see a clear benefit, and that nearly two-thirds of people who connect bank accounts to AI assistants through Plaid had never used a Plaid-powered personal finance app. Anthropic joins more than 800 AI companies building with Plaid, the company said.

Background: chatbots become financial companions

The feature is a consumer product, not Anthropic’s enterprise Claude for Financial Services offering. TechCrunch notes that it arrives as Anthropic expands Claude into more verticals, after Claude for Legal and Claude for Financial Services earlier this year.

It is also a catch-up move. Both TechCrunch and The Verge say ChatGPT introduced similar personal finance tools in May 2026 that likewise let users connect financial accounts through Plaid and ask about spending and planning. i10x is citing those reports for the ChatGPT comparison and is not restating OpenAI’s full product terms here.

Anthropic is already signaling a next step. The announcement closes by calling Personal Finance “a first step” and saying that for life’s bigger money decisions, “people are best served by Claude working alongside the licensed professionals and regulated firms they trust.” The company says it wants to hear from banks, wealth managers and financial services companies that want to help shape that.

How it works

Setup lives in a Personal Finance item in Claude’s side menu. The user chooses optional goals, reviews what Claude will be able to access, then signs in to each bank through Plaid. Plaid opens in a new window on the web, in the default browser from Claude Desktop, inside the iOS app, or in a browser tab on Android. Anthropic’s help center says to finish within 10 minutes and return to Claude right away; transactions can take a few minutes to sync.

Users can link up to 16 banks. To add an account at a bank that is already linked, they link the bank again and share every account they want Claude to read. If Claude says the bank is already linked, the user can switch to the new login, keep the existing link, or keep both — for example for a joint or business login. If the same account appears under both logins and the bank shows it the same way, Claude counts it once; if the bank shows it differently, totals may double-count it.

For the accounts a user chooses to share, Claude can read bank names; account names, types and last four digits; balances and credit limits; and up to 24 months of transactions, including the amount, date, merchant, category and the bank’s description. Anthropic’s announcement says “up to two years of transactions,” which matches the help center’s 24 months. Plaid gives Claude only the last few digits of each account number (usually four). If a bank writes a full number into an account name or a transaction description, Claude may see it there. On investments, loans and cards, Claude reads balances and credit limits, not holdings, trades, rates or terms, even if Plaid’s own screens ask for broader consent.

Personal Finance can only read accounts. It cannot move, manage or invest money. Anthropic repeats that Claude is AI and can make mistakes, and that important figures should be checked against the bank’s own app or statements. Balances can be a day or two old. While Claude cannot read a bank, the page’s spending figures leave that bank out, so a budget can show more money left than the user has.

Privacy is split by surface. “When you chat with Claude in the Personal Finance hub, those conversations aren’t used to train our models,” both the announcement and the help center say. “For anything you share with Claude outside the hub, your privacy settings apply.” The data appears in the conversation and stays in chat history until the user deletes the chat, subject to Anthropic’s retention practices. Service providers that host Claude also handle bank data, and Plaid handles it under its own terms. Users can unlink a bank in Claude or disconnect at my.plaid.com.

Once Claude has used linked accounts in a regular chat, it is designed not to save anything from that chat to memory or search that chat later, and it leaves the chat out of the monthly recap. Claude asks before publishing an artifact from a chat that used linked accounts; a shared chat link shows messages and replies, including figures from those accounts.

Detail

What Anthropic says

Limit

Availability

Beta, rolling out gradually this week (announced November 5) on Pro, Max and Ultra in the US

Not on Free, Team or Enterprise; not shown outside the US or on some VPNs

Where it runs

Claude on the web, Claude Desktop, Claude for iOS and Claude for Android

Not available in Claude Duet; linked accounts cannot be used in scheduled tasks, Cowork tasks or Claude Code

Connection

Plaid; the user signs in to the bank through Plaid, so Claude does not ask for or see the bank password

Users also agree to Plaid’s terms and privacy policy

What Claude can read

Bank name; account name, type and last four digits; balances and credit limits; up to 24 months of transactions (amount, date, merchant, category and the bank’s description)

It does not read holdings, trades, rates or loan terms; a full account number may still appear if the bank writes it into a name or description

How many banks

Up to 16 banks; unlink one to add another after that

Unlinking is per bank login, not per account; unlinking the last bank resets the dashboard

What it cannot do

Cannot move, manage or invest money; “isn’t designed to give investment advice”

Claude is AI and can make mistakes; balances can be a day or two old

Training and privacy

Chats in the Personal Finance hub are not used to train models; outside the hub, the user’s privacy settings apply

Shared chat links and artifacts can still show figures from linked accounts

Pros and cons

For users

Pro: Eligible US subscribers can ask plain-language questions across up to 16 banks without giving Claude a bank password, and hub chats are excluded from training.

Con: Connecting 24 months of transactions to a chatbot is a real privacy decision, the rollout excludes Free users, and Claude can still be wrong or a day or two behind the bank.

For developers

Pro: The connector surface is documented: Plaid can be turned off for chats, and Claude asks before linking or unlinking a bank inside a conversation.

Con: Linked accounts do not work in Claude Code, Cowork, scheduled tasks or Claude Duet, so the same user can have a finance hub that their coding agent cannot see.

For companies

Pro: Anthropic is openly inviting banks and wealth managers to help design a next step in which Claude works alongside licensed professionals, rather than pretending a chatbot can replace them.

Con: Shared artifacts and chat links can display a user’s bank figures, and a move onto a Team or Enterprise plan unlinks personal banks — an awkward handoff between consumer finance data and work accounts.

What X is saying

Claude’s own launch post framed the feature around read-only access. Anthropic’s answer is the combination of no bank password, a published list of fields Claude can see, hub chats excluded from training, and a one-click unlink.

Critical analysis

The product is carefully scoped, and that is the point. Anthropic is not claiming to move money, pick stocks or replace an adviser. It is claiming that a chatbot with read-only Plaid data can explain where last month’s spending went, in everyday language, without ads. That is a narrower — and more defensible — pitch than “AI financial advisor.”

The privacy wording is also narrower than a casual reading might suggest. Hub chats are excluded from training; chats outside the hub are not automatically excluded. Shared links and artifacts can still display bank figures to anyone who opens them. Those details live in the help center rather than the launch headline, and they are the ones that matter once a user starts asking about money in a regular conversation.

The competitive context is straightforward. ChatGPT has offered a similar Plaid connection since May, according to TechCrunch and The Verge. Claude’s differentiators, as Anthropic tells them, are the lack of ads or sponsored products and the company’s existing consumer trust pitch. Whether users actually want a second chatbot connected to their checking account is a product question the gradual US rollout is meant to answer.

What’s still open

How quickly will the beta reach all US Pro, Max and Ultra users, and will Anthropic expand beyond the US or to Free, Team or Enterprise?

Will Anthropic follow through on working with licensed professionals and regulated firms for larger money decisions?

How will users distinguish hub chats (not used for training) from regular chats that happen to use Plaid?

What happens to accuracy when balances are a day or two stale, or when the same account is counted twice across two logins?

✍️ About the analysis

This independent, research-based i10x analysis draws on Anthropic’s November 5 announcement, the Claude Help Center article “Use Personal Finance in Claude,” Plaid’s partnership post, and same-day reporting by TechCrunch and The Verge. The comparison with ChatGPT’s May 2026 Plaid feature is attributed to those two publications. The more interesting test is whether users trust the boundary. If hub chats stay out of training, money never moves, and Claude is honest about what it cannot see — holdings, rates, advice — Personal Finance is a useful layer on top of Plaid. If those boundaries blur in regular chats, shared artifacts or a future “next step” with financial firms, the same feature becomes a much larger privacy decision than a monthly spending chart.

Anthropic began rolling out Personal Finance in Claude on November 5, 2026, as a US-only beta for Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers.
